Fine Art meets Neuroscience
As an artist and art therapist I respect and honor the healing qualities of the creative process as a tool for integration and a reflection of one's internal experience. As an art therapist I use a brain systems approach and the Expressive Therapies Continuum rooted in the developments of Neuroscience to target specific brain areas that may not be functioning optimally. Based on an individualized treatment plan I allow the organic and intuitive act of art-making to lead as an assessment of where one is and as a tool to determine where to go. I look for materials and applications that can hone into particular regions so that one may have new experiences and/or strengthen such areas the same way one might use a set of exercises for other muscles in their body.
Additionally I promote a holistic lifestyle to support such integrative activity to maximize the benefits of the creative endeavor. I encourage daily exposure to the elements, either during the art process or for physical recreation, for its natural health benefits along with whole food choices to reinforce the neuro-plasticity of the brain. Preparing a beautiful meal is just as much a creative process as modeling clay or painting a mural. With these I also urge the practice of rest and relaxation balanced with social stimulation and laughter. Working through art, imagery, and metaphor with a naturopathic approach I am fully devoted to holistic integration to achieve health and happiness.
Regardless of age and/or background...creativity is a gift afforded to all beings as another means of knowing oneself and the world. My job (and pleasure) are to facilitate such a journey while gently offering choices and making materials/activities available that may not have been otherwise seen. In doing so I become a guide on an incredible journey that allows for change to occur in one or more areas of the brain/life for hope of a better future.
